Last of the Westland Whigs

In the late 17th century, the 'Westland Whigs' were the radical descendants of earlier Covenanters who had defied the absolutist rule of Stuart kings in south west Scotland.

Gaelic farm names in Galloway

This is a list by parish of farms with Gaelic names in the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright. I complied the list to help resolve some confusion which follows from Daphne Brooke's theory that there were Northumbrian 'shires' in Galloway. [Proceedings Society of Antiquaries of Scotland Vol. 121, 1991]. When Brooke's list of Anglian settlements is compared with Christopher Tabraham's list of Norman mottes and Anglo-Norman settlements in the Stewartry [in Studies in Scottish Antiquity ed. D. Breeze, 1984] there is an overlap, suggesting some of Brooke's Old English place names could be Middle English/ Older Scots.

Brooke's shires covered most of the lowlands of the central Stewartry - a very large block of territory. In contrast, Tabraham's Norman settlements are smaller and more scattered. In theory then, the areas inbetween the Norman settlements would have been occupied by Gaelic speakers. To illustrate this I produced map (see below) showing the nearest farms with Gaelic names to Tabraham's mottes.

This shows part of the pattern, but I then wondered about the rest of the farms with Gaelic names and how they were distributed. Hence the following list of 650 + such farms. The next stage will be to think through any implications. Part of Brooke's theory was that the blocks of Northumbrian territory survived to become the building blocks of the kingdom/lordship of Galloway established by Fergus circa 1120 and that some of these blocks of territory survived through the Douglas lordship (1369-1455). To check this will need another table and map showing the distribution of Douglas lands.

What is missing, but would be difficult/ impossible to establish, are the landholdings of the main Gaelic kindreds/ clans. How was Gaelic Galloway organised, what was its structure? How did the pattern of Gaelic land holding change and evolve - and did it leave an imprint on the patterns of land ownership which can be traced from the fifteenth century onwards? The seventeenth century pattern which emerges from Peter McKerlie's Lands and their Owners in Galloway is one of hundreds of small estates possessed by owner/occupier bonnet lairds - but this pattern seems to have emerged through the break-up of larger estates owned by a few key families - Maxwells, Gordons and McClellan's in the Stewartry, McDowells and McCullochs in the Shire. Understanding the patterns of landownership help to make sense of the religious and political conflicts of the seventeenth century and the Galloway Levellers uprising in the eighteenth.

Here is the list...
